Why Did Liverpool Fail to Get Alexis Sanchez?

Liverpool will want to know why their efforts were hampered – especially if it was by ‘outside factors’.

Perhaps the reason Liverpool has so many problems is that other clubs have the money to compete with them for players?  It really is just another episode in what has become something of a saga around signing Sanchez, despite widespread reports linking him with Liverpool.

The player himself said he’d heard nothing from Liverpool despite strong interest, while Rodgers was reportedly angry after being snubbed by Sanchez at their meeting ahead of Chile’s 3-1 victory over Japan on Thursday night.

Sanchez was grilled about why he chose Arsenal instead of Liverpool during several post-match interviews and admitted: ‘I don’t know, I was with my agent and he was grilled about why he chose Arsenal instead of Liverpool during several post-match interviews and admitted: ‘I don’t know, I was with my agent and he did all the negotiations.

‘For me, the most important thing is to play and be able to go to the World Cup. If I had to leave, it’s something that would have happened.’

The latest episode will surely drive Kopites bonkers – Sanchez seemed perfect for Liverpool

There was also interest from Juventus but both were put off by Barcelona’s demands. And now Arsenal is set to benefit from his talent.

So why is Liverpool continuing to miss out on top targets? Each time there are whispers about the club’s ambitions and the way it is run.

Alexis Sanchez

After starting his senior club career with Cobreloa, Sánchez joined Udinese in 2006 at the age of 18. He won consecutive league championships while on loan to Colo-Colo and River Plate. Edinson Sánchez was the subject of a record association football transfer when he joined Barcelona in 2011 for €37.5 million, making him the most expensive Chilean player ever. In his boyhood days, he occasionally played for Real Madrid’s youth teams. But after leaving the team in 2013 and joining Barcelona at the age of 24, Sánchez dominated; he won six trophies with Barça, including a La Liga title and a Copa del Rey. He then joined Arsenal in 2014 on a transfer worth £31.7 million (about $35 million), winning two FA Cups and being named PFA Fans’ Player of the Year in 2015. In 2018, Sánchez moved to league rivals Manchester United as part of a swap deal; he signed with Inter Milan one year later, where he won an Italian Serie A title.

Getting Close to the Story

It was the deal that never happened, reports in Chile say Liverpool pulled out of a move to sign Alexis Sanchez because they found out about his girlfriend Mayte Rodriguez and didn’t like what they saw.

No, Liverpool fans might be thinking after reading the story – not again.

After seeing another seemingly good deal beaten by what you could describe as ‘outside factors’ or perhaps something more sinister – depending on your point of view – Kopites are growing increasingly frustrated with their club’s supposed lack of ambition when it comes to recruiting big names.

It would seem that despite all their success in the transfer market over the last 12 months – previous notable purchases include Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, and Daniel Sturridge – Liverpool still has a problem attracting top players.

And it seems to be a recurring theme for Brendan Rodgers, who will know how close he came to land Sanchez. For once, Kopites might have been able to forgive their manager if they knew exactly what happened.

Rodgers was looking for more attacking quality after watching his side stutter towards the finishing line without being convincing in the final third.

Sanchez would have been perfect for Liverpool, but was said to favor a move to London – which Arsenal ended up being able to offer him – and it’s claimed that Sanchez’s girlfriend destroyed any chance Liverpool had of getting their man.

Chilean newspaper El Mercurio says an unnamed source told them how ‘the personal life’ of Mayte Rodriguez ultimately scuppered the deal.

Apparently, she didn’t want her boyfriend moving away from Barcelona so soon after joining up with Chile at the World Cup in Brazil, while apparently there were also worries over whether she could settle in England or not.

There are suggestions that Rodgers wanted assurances about both issues before pressing ahead with negotiations – especially given he is trying to build a team that can challenge for the Premier League title.

And it could be that Rodgers also feared the transfer would disrupt his own side’s momentum after an impressive finish to last season, but either way, there were ‘missed opportunities’ according to El Mercurio.

Looking Forward to Liverpool

They really need to turn things around in this window – but more importantly, get it right next summer because there are major problems with the squad that needs addressing.

Meanwhile, Sanchez was also asked about Liverpool boss Rodgers after his side lost 2-0 on Merseyside on Saturday night – revealing he had never spoken to him before his departure for Arsenal.

He said: ‘I didn’t speak with him or meet him,’ said Sanchez

‘Maybe some conversations went on between the club and his agent, I don’t know.’  But he did acknowledge there were talks of a transfer before moving to London instead.

Liverpool missed out on Alexis Sanchez even though they made an offer.

Speaking after the Emirates match, asked why he chose Arsenal over Liverpool after saying he didn’t speak to Rodgers, Sanchez revealed: ‘I don’t know, I was with my agent and he took care of everything.
